Embracing Perfectionism and Authenticity as an Online Brand and Business Owner: A Conversation with Martina Fink
Perfectionism is a topic close to my heart and, as a recovering perfectionist myself, I know it's something many of you are navigating too. This two-part episode is inspired by a conversation with my dear friend Martina Fink—a specialist in self-care and helping perfectionists embrace change.
Perfectionism can be a tricky hurdle for many entrepreneurs. I've been open about my battles with it, a struggle familiar to many of my clients. Martina emphasizes the importance of shifting focus from external validation to living from the inside out. This means detaching from others' expectations and instead doing what truly brings you joy and fulfillment.
Martina and I first connected at a mastermind event in 2017 and have since become the best of friends. I’m thrilled to share insights from our chat, focusing on showing up in the online space as a perfectionist, trusting oneself, and taking bold steps as entrepreneurs and women.
Inside this two-episode special of the Authentic Brand Builders podcast, we’ll dive into:
How to build a brand when you struggle with comparisonitis and the perfectionism trap on social media.
One of the most powerful journal prompts from Martina, to help you discover your true passions.
How to take action or make big changes when you’re worried about looking silly or failing publicly.
The process of trusting yourself as a business owner and perfectionist.
**I’ve included the main points below, but I encourage you to dive into the full episode via audio or video!
For the full content, and all the insider tips, listen to Episodes 125 and 126 or explore the video on the Brandmerry YouTube channel.
Self-Discovery and Authentic Branding
A major theme of our conversation was the importance of self-discovery in authentic brand building.
So many entrepreneurs struggle with defining who they are and how they want to present themselves.
Journal prompts and reflective questions can help you to start shifting focus from external pressures to internal passions.
Two journal prompts Martina shared were:
If money was no issue, what would I want? What would I do with my time, my energy?
If you knew everyone would be excited about what you do, what would you do? If everyone was cheerleading you on what would you do? What would excite you?
Social media can be a daunting, perfectionism-driven space if you're not grounded in who you are.
Many of you might find yourself mimicking others, which is often a sign of not having clarity about your own brand identity. Martina suggests using structure to guide your content creation while also allowing space for creativity and authenticity.
This is why we’re big fans of doing the internal story work FIRST before building your brand and business. It’s one of the pre-work sections inside of You! Branded.
Getting Unstuck as a Perfectionist
One of the biggest challenges for perfectionists is the fear of taking action due to potential rejection or failure.
Identifying what you’re afraid of and understanding the worst-case scenarios can help you confront these fears. Martina is a big fan of adopting a mindset of “better done than perfect” which can liberate you from perfectionism, allowing your true self to shine through.
When it comes to taking action as a perfectionist a lot of it depends on trusting yourself and your decisions. Often times when we feel stuck it’s because we are second-guessing ourselves.
Trusting your instincts and decisions is pivotal for overcoming perfectionism. Whether trying something new or allowing yourself to take a break when uninspired, it's important to create self-trust. This gives you the confidence to make decisions aligned with your authentic self and business goals and the confidence to take aligned action.
The Journey of Trusting Yourself
Martina and I addressed a crucial question: How do we learn to trust ourselves, especially when external pressures are overwhelming? This journey of self-trust often begins at a breaking point, a moment where you realize the need for change becomes undeniable.
We discussed how businesses and lives transition through seasons and emphasized the necessity of granting ourselves permission to change our paths. In entrepreneurial ventures, where the drive to succeed can sometimes overshadow intuition, understanding when to pause, reflect, and pivot becomes well, pivotal.
Perhaps, my favorite part of the conversation was when Martina provided an amazing perspective on making choices from a place of love rather than fear.
She suggests that when faced with decisions, we should focus on what feels expansive in our body, like a sensation of openness in the chest or a lightness in our thoughts.
This choice, cultivated through practice, leads to decisions that align more closely with our true desires. By practicing intuition with everyday small choices, like deciding between matcha or coffee, we can gradually strengthen this skill and apply it to more significant life decisions.
The Foundation of Sustainable Self-Care
During our chat, Martina highlighted three critical elements of self-care: quality sleep, setting boundaries, and journaling. Perfectionists often overlook these essentials, prioritizing tasks for others over their own needs.
Taking time for oneself doesn't have to mean a rigid routine; it should be about what truly nurtures you.
Self-care should not become another checkbox on a list. Instead, it should be about listening to your physiological needs and simplifying your approach. Start small, and gradually make time for these activities without feeling overburdened by the need for perfection.
Martina has put together a Self-Care Planner for Perfectionists that you can get here.

How to Use SEO Tools to Come Up With Content Ideas for Your Brand
Creating a seamless and effective content strategy can be overwhelming, especially when trying to maintain consistency online.
To simplify this process, I’m a huge advocate for planning 90 days of content in advance.
Planning content for 90 days might sound daunting, but with an SEO-focused approach, it becomes manageable.
This strategy revolves around creating one core piece of content each week, which equals only 12 content topics for three full months (aka a quarter).
By leveraging platforms like Pinterest, YouTube, and Google Search, you can align your content with your brand's core messages and SEO goals.
I break down a full Marketing Plan in this video using an SEO-centered approach.
Today’s blog is focused on how to find these content ideas using SEO tools. If you prefer to watch the tutorial video, including a screen share of each tool, watch the video below.
Creating Your Content Web
Before diving into specific content ideas, it's crucial to build a foundation called the "content web." This strategy helps ensure your content aligns with your brand and leads back to your paid offers or services.
1. Centralize Your Brand: Start by placing your brand name at the center of your web. Branch out into subtopics that represent your expertise and the primary benefits you offer. You can also put a specific offer in the center (think your course if gearing up for a launch), and branch out from there.
2. Framework Expansion: For each subtopic, expand into broader categories to support you thorough SEO research. This method prevents having content that potentially goes viral but doesn't lead to customer conversions.
Tools for Content Ideas Using SEO Research
Once your content web is in place, it's time to tap into powerful tools to generate specific content ideas. Again, this video walks you through the process with a glimpse at my screen!
Begin with "Answer the Public," a free tool that pulls data from Google to help identify popular search queries. Enter broad topics, such as personal branding or home organization, to unveil commonly searched terms related to your field.
You can see specific SEO data, as well as the type of wording people are using when searching online. This can help you choose topics that will get your brand seen, as well as make sure the wording you’re using is the same as your ideal customer.
SEO research and understanding what keywords to go for can feel like a lot. Inside, the Content Strategy Blueprint I share exactly how to perform this research, what to look for, and how to create 90 days of content.Get the details here.
People Also Ask: Keywords Everywhere
Once you’ve narrowed down some topics you can click through to Google, or open another tab. Using the Keywords Everywhere plug-in, you can scroll down to see the “People Also Ask” section to discover niche questions your audience might have. This can offer insights into content angles you hadn't considered.
Google also offers a glimpse into this with the “People Also Search For” at the bottom of the search results. Just scroll down!
Auto-fill on SEO Platforms
Utilize auto-fill suggestions on platforms like YouTube or Pinterest to uncover trending or related topics in your industry. These suggestions can help you identify market gaps, as well as different angles to explore. Bonus points because it’s completely free!
Applying Your Ideas to Your Content Strategy
By just following these few steps you could have an entire quarter of topics, maybe even a year!
Remember: It’s important to select a broader topic and break it down into smaller series or segments for your research. The more specific you are to start, the harder it will be to get results. You can use your results to then expand into micro topics of the series. For example, under "home organization," explore niches like "organization for ADHD" or "minimalist home tips."
If you're ready to dive deeper into SEO research and better understand the data to support your content and marketing goals, be sure to explore the Content Strategy Blueprint here.
FREE GIFT FOR YOU!
Remember, the ultimate goal is to create content that resonates with your audience and drives them toward your paid offers. The key to any great strategy is consistency.
Inside my new free guide, the Content Playbook, I’m giving you ALL of my top secrets ways to plan, prep, create, and distribute your content consistently.

How I’ve Embraced Content Strategy Shifts as an Online Business Owner
Many people believe that consistency means showing up every single day without a break, but I don't see that as sustainable. In addition, content strategies must shift not only to the demands of the market but also to personal life demands as well.
Over the past eight years of being a business owner, my content strategy has shifted numerous times. I've learned to value intentional breaks, which allow me to recharge and continue delivering valuable content, as well as completely overhauling my strategy when it no longer serves me.
If you've noticed a theme in our recent Authentic Brand Builder Podcast episodes, you're not alone. We're all about sharing behind-the-scenes lessons and experiences directly from my journey.
As you know, storytelling is a core part of my message, and today, I'm excited to dive into discussing my content strategy and how it’s changed throughout the years, and what drove those changes.
I'm pulling back the curtain to share my evolving content strategy over the past eight years as a business owner.
Inside today’s episode of the Authentic Brand Builders podcast, we’ll dive into:
The evolution of my content strategy throughout my eight years as a business owner, from the birth of my son, traveling in an RV, and today.
The unrealistic expectation of daily consistency when it comes to content creation and how I’ve shifted my strategy to meet both personal and business demands.
The importance of adapting strategies to fit lifestyle changes to maintain effectiveness without burnout.
Personally, I think this is the perfect episode to watch or listen to because of the storytelling aspect.

Building a Team for Your Business: How to Hire and My Biggest Lessons
If you think that you have to have a big team to run a successful online business, I’m glad you’ve found this post.
I used to think the exact same thing, but my experience has taught me otherwise.
When I first started my business, like so many of you, I was a solopreneur. I didn't have the extra money to pay someone when I was trying to simply pay myself.
So, I dedicated most of my time to the business, creatively thinking about it and providing for my family. This approach worked well for a while.
As I started taking on more marketing responsibilities, I began considering hiring a team.
Industry advice pointed me towards hiring for admin work: scheduling clients, sending contracts, etc.
These tasks never quite justified the need for hiring someone in my mind. I instead thought about the areas where hiring help would directly contribute to generating revenue.
My first hire was a Virtual Assistant (VA) for contracted work, specifically for marketing-related tasks.
I remember feeling nervous about the financial commitment, but it quickly paid off.
This small hire allowed me to reclaim valuable time, which I used to focus on revenue-generating activities like hosting live events and webinars.
From there, I began to think hiring a big team was needed - boy was I wrong.
Inside today’s episode of the Authentic Brand Builders podcast, we’ll dive into:
One of my most expensive lessons with hiring a team and what it taught me.
The first few steps to take and things to consider when hiring team members.
The type of first hire I recommend every solopreneur consider for the highest ROI.
**I’ve included the main points below, but I encourage you to dive into the full episode via audio or video!
For the full content, and all the insider tips, listen to Episode 122 now.
Hiring My Big Team: Mistakes and Regrets
By 2019, I received a lot of messages suggesting that expanding past the six-figure mark was only possible with a bigger team.
I hired multiple team members: a marketing manager, an operations manager, someone for community handling, an ads team, and more.
On paper, it looked great, and I felt like a CEO. But reality soon set in.
I found myself constantly on calls and managing people, which drained my creative energy.
While I worked with some amazing individuals, the constant meetings and decision-making were exhausting and not aligned with how I wanted to spend my day.
In addition, the ROI was not what I expected, and the work ethic and values of some team members didn’t match my business vision.
At the beginning of 2022, I decided to restructure my business focusing first and foremost on my team.
I scaled back to having just one team member, Delana, my operations manager, and my husband, who was handling video and podcast editing.
This shift allowed me to regain my creativity and passion for my business. My business felt exciting again, and I felt supported in the areas of my business where I needed the most support.
Four Tips for Building Your Team
Here are some recommendations for when and how to hire, based on my experience and supporting my clients in building their support system
1. Assesses Your Tasks
Start by logging your daily tasks for a week or two. List everything down. Then highlight the tasks you don't enjoy doing. Remember, we’re starting with you and what works for you!
2. Track Your Time
The next step is to track your time. I’m time-blind and something that feels like it took 30 minutes, takes me 2 hours, so having a tracker has been a true blessing.
Use a tool like ToggleTrack to see where you’re spending most of your time. Then you want to compare the data. What areas are you spending a lot of time, and don’t enjoy the process - this is where to start.
This is crucial because something like creating designs for my business takes me a lot of time, but I creatively enjoy it.
3. Find Your Tools First
Before hiring, see if there are tools available that can save you time. Administrative tools can be lifesavers when it comes to saving time. Consider something like Honeybook to automate your onboarding or Acuity Scheduling to automate reminder emails.
If you’re creating video or podcast content, then Descript is my absolute favorite tool for this. AI tools are helpful in outsourcing tasks and personally, my favorite use of AI.
4. Start With Small Projects
One of my best tips is to begin with project-based hires. This allows you to assess the work and fit without long-term commitments. For instance, hiring for a single landing page, an email migration, and setting up an evergreen email funnel, can all be great places to start.
Consider if the person has additional skillsets if you’re thinking about hiring for more projects or long-term work!
What to Hire First in Business
I always suggest starting with marketing hires. Why? Because marketing has an incredible ROI. If you’re hiring for the first time, it can be helpful to see that this particular person helped make money for the business. A good marketing hire can bring in leads and sales, providing a clear return on investment.
Ideas include hiring someone to upload and optimize your YouTube content, upload your podcast, schedule your blogs, help with social media, schedule your Pinterest, etc…
Then, as your business grows, having someone dedicated to customer relations becomes crucial. Personalization and customer care are key to retaining clients and building a loyal community.
How to Find Team Members
I suggest getting recommendations from your network to start. You can also consider platforms like Upwork or Fiverr, especially if you’re hiring for a specific project. Remember, it’s essential to find someone who understands and aligns with your business values so don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions.
When hiring it’s also helpful to understand different roles and how they might fit into your long-term team-building plan.
Consider the different levels of support you might need:
VAs for general tasks and the ability to do a lot of different things for your business
Specialists who focus on one area like podcast managers or video editors
Online Business Managers for higher-level management and support
Often these can cross over, or you might find that your podcast manager also loves graphic design and is taking on clients. I discovered so many of my team members' hidden talents by asking and sharing the areas I needed support in.
CONCLUSION
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to building a team. For instance, while others might prefer outsourcing customer service, I keep it in-house for a more personalized touch. You truly have to discover what aligns with your business goals and values.
Every business is unique, and what works for one may not work for another. Always think about how you want to spend your day. Consider if you enjoy meetings and calls, or if you prefer hands-on work. Honoring your authentic self and style is crucial when building your team

How to Choose the Right Marketing Strategy for Your Business
I get it, all the marketing strategies available online can be overwhelming, especially for entrepreneurs.
But, let me be honest with you for a second - THEY ALL WORK!
The idea that there is one magical approach that fits all is a myth. What works for you determines who you are as a person, your schedule, and what aligns with your brand.
Every business, every brand, and every entrepreneur is unique, so the approach that works wonders for one might completely miss the mark for another.
Today’s episode is all about how to identify the best marketing strategy for you and why authenticity in your marketing strategy is key to your brand’s success.
Inside today’s episode of the Authentic Brand Builders podcast, we’ll dive into:
Why your marketing strategy is a direct reflection of your authentic brand and might even play the largest role in your brand’s success.
The 3 levels of marketing that every strategy NEEDS to hit consistently to have leads and sales.
The top questions to ask yourself to determine which marketing strategy will work for YOUR brand.
**I’ve included the main points below, but I encourage you to dive into the full episode via audio or video!

The Three Main Marketing Buckets to Explore
Marketing strategies can generally be categorized into three primary buckets: Organic Social Media, Paid Advertising, and SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Let’s break each one down to see which might be your best fit.
1. Organic Social Media
We all know that this is posting content on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to build brand awareness organically. Social media posting works, we all know this. It’s a great way to build brand connection, there is the potential for viral reach, and it allows you to diversify your content.
However, it also comes with quite a few cons like the requirement for high-frequency content, which means it’s time-consuming, and platform-dependent. If the platforms go so does your strategy.
In my experience, while I’ve had success with organic social media, it has its challenges. The constant demand for fresh, engaging content can be exhausting, and I don’t genuinely enjoy being on social media platforms all the time.
2. Paid Advertising
Paid advertising is investing in ads on platforms like Facebook, Google, or Pinterest to reach a targeted audience. I’ve used ads in my business and they are great because of the quick results, essentially more hands-off than other strategies, and scalable based on budget.
However, some of the cons are that it requires money up front and a consistent budget to maintain and scale results, and the quality of leads coming into your business may vary.
I’ve used paid advertising successfully but found it wasn’t always sustainable. I struggled with some of the copywriting strategies that were working to “hook” people with my ad and they never really felt true to my brand even if they might increase clicks. I also found that even if I got great clicks on my ads, the type of client I was attracting wasn’t contributing to my bigger brand goals like client relationships, and retention.
3. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
SEO, my personal favorite, is all about using keywords, and higher-quality content to show up on search engines based on what your audience is looking for.
SEO is amazing for content longevity, meaning it keeps working long after you’ve published it. It attracts high-quality, targeted traffic to your website, and results in leads and sales on a higher scale. And, personally, I love that it builds trust and authority quickly with my audience because it’s what they are genuinely looking for.
As with all strategies, there can be some cons. It does take a bit more time to see results, requires content (which honestly is required for all except ads), and can be a bit technical and complex when getting started.
SEO has become my marketing bread and butter. It perfectly aligns with my lifestyle, allowing me to create meaningful, evergreen content that brings quality leads consistently. Unlike social media or paid ads, SEO’s has been providing long-term benefits for my brand for years.
Finding the Marketing Strategy that Works for You
Consider Your Day-to-Day Life
Choosing a marketing strategy begins with reflecting on your daily life and business needs.
Do you want something hands-on, or do you need a more passive strategy? For instance, social media may require daily engagement, while SEO can run on autopilot once set up.
Identify Your Strengths
Whether you’re an impeccable writer, love being on camera, or thrive in choosing aesthetics, your strengths should be what guide you toward the right strategy. Loving what you do makes it easier to stay consistent and authentic, which is really the key to any successful marketing strategy.
Marketing Fundamentals
Another key part of choosing the right strategy for you is making sure you can remain consistent in hitting all three core pillars of marketing:
1. Brand Awareness
This is where people discover your brand and is one of the most crucial pieces. You don’t need giant numbers, but you do need a steady flow of new people discovering your brand. The strategy you choose will impact this greatly.
2. Brand Attraction
Once someone discovers your brand, we want to build trust to move them through the customer journey. This is what happens at this stage.
3. Brand Connection
Finally, at the brand connection phase you’ve built trust and they become a buying customer and hopefully repeat!
Each platform you choose can fulfill these pillars differently but always aim to hit all three.
So you have to ask yourself which strategy is going to allow you to do that.
SEO: The Approach for Most Entrepreneurs
SEO is unique because it sustains brand awareness without constant input. While I still use social media and paid ads occasionally, SEO remains my primary focus due to its longevity and consistency.
